Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the advantages of wood?
A:
- Ideal insulator – Wood is 400 times more effective than steel and 1800 times more effective than aluminum.
- Energy efficient – A well constructed wood door combined with good weather-stripping provides the ultimate barrier to heat or cold.
- Naturally sound absorbent – Wood windows and doors block noise from entering or exiting a room.
- The most environmentally friendly – Wood is completely renewable as nearly two billion trees are replanted each year on public and private lands.
Q: Can VanDenBosch paint or stain color?
A: With VanDenBosch you have the option to have us paint or stain the doors prior to installation. We use high-quality spray paint systems that leave you with great looking doors without any paintbrush or roller marks.
If your doors are removed from the hinges to paint, or for any other reason, VanDenBosch's warranty will be void. For this reason we recommend having your doors pre-painted by us, or we suggest you leave your doors on the hinges if you paint them yourself.
Q: Can I pick a paint or stain color?
A: VanDenBosch uses Dunn Edwards Cottage White, Swiss Coffee or Pure White in Permasheen (semi-gloss). If you would like to pick another brand, color or finish, we do request that you provide us we the name of the brand, the color or custom mix recipe, and the sheen. As long as the brand and color is available in the Phoenix area and the quality of the paint is good, VanDenBosch will use that color to paint the doors.
The standard Sherwin Williams stain colors are: Clear, Fruitwood, Autumn Oak, Traditional Cherry, and Van Dyke Brown. If you would like a different stain color we will work with you to develop a custom stain color from a mix of Sherwin Williams hues.
Q: When should I have the jambs and trim painted?
A: In many cases, customers decide to paint their jambs after the doors are removed. This makes painting much easier. Installation can be scheduled to allow you plenty of time to finish painting your jambs. Your freshly painted doors are then installed without any paint-mess on your hinges and hardware.
Q: Can you make my doors longer?
A: Yes. After houses settle or carpet is removed and replaced with hardwood floors, it's possible you will have excess gaps around your doors or between the floor and door. VanDenBosch's trained technicians will make the necessary adjustments to extend the doors allowing for a proper fit without excessive gaps or rubbing. VanDenBosch's untrimmed doors are 1/2' longer and 1/4" wide then the standard door. This gives the technician extra material to fill gaps while trimming the new doors.
If you plan to replace your carpet with hardwood floors, or vice versa, please let the technician know at pickup time. He/she can take that in consideration when fitting the door.
Q: Do the doors warp?
A: VanDenBosch’s doors are constructed from the finest quality wood; these doors are built to reduce the possibility of warping if finished property. The finish (painting or staining) is critical to prevent warping, though there is still a possibility that this could occur; however, it should not be noticeable with the naked eye.
The VanDenBosch Warranty protects you against the slim possibility that the door would warp after it is finished by us.
Q: Will I have to touch up the paint on my jambs and casing?
A: In many cases, due to the original installation or the normal movement of the house over time, jamb legs may become uneven with each other. This can prevent the door from closing evenly against the wood stops. In order to correct this condition and the appearance and performance of the door, the hinges and wood stops may need to be moved in or out, possibly creating the need for minor paint touch-up by you or your painter.
